Injury Prevention/Education Programs

In consultation with the employer or Occupational Health and Safety departments we will develop and implement targeted workplace programs to decrease injury risk profiles and improve workplace productivity.

Worker programs will include:

  • Pre-employment Screening (physical)
  • Work Demands Analysis
  • Work Site Visits
  • Medical Exercise Programs
  • Return to Work Facilitation Services
  • Health and Wellness Education
Work Site Visit

A Work Site Visit (WSV) is defined as a workplace visit for the purpose of supporting the injured worker in remaining or returning to work.

The WSV may include any or all of the following:

  • A brief review of work tasks.
  • Confirmation of the injured worker's critical job demands.
  • Exploration of simple job modifications and return to work options.
  • Consultation with the employer and other relevant stakeholders, to establish an appropriate return to work plan.
  • Communication/education of the employer regarding return to work opportunities.
  • Ongoing support of graduated return to work plan including, job coaching/shadowing
Work Demands Analysis

A work demands analysis (WDA) is a detailed, quantitative assessment of the physical demands, environmental and psychosocial stressors associated with a particular job. The assessment may or may not have the worker present. The WDA will provide quantification of the workplace demands including frequency of workplace activities, weights, distances, heights, etc. The WDA will also include observations related to other workplace factors including temperature, workstation design and psychosocial factors, which may impact the workplace environment.

Graduated Return to Work Planning (GRTW Planning)

The GRTW Plan must be developed with the participation of and be clearly communicated to the injured worker, the employer, the attending physician and other relevant stakeholders, including other health care providers involved in the workers care.

The Plan will contain specific hours and duties for a specified period of time and a defined end date.

Approval for the GRTW Plan will be gained prior to implementation.

The GRTW Plan will be submitted to the employer, attending Physician, other health care providers involved with the worker's care and the relevant funder of the plan.

GRTW Planning may require a functional screen of the worker by our physiotherapist to determine worker's baseline functional abilities prior to creating the plan.

Graduated Return to Work Monitoring: (GRTW Monitoring)

GRTW Monitoring will be used to offer continuing support and coordination of the GRTW Plan. Monitoring will continue for up to 6 weeks and will occur through weekly communications with the worker, the attending physician and any other health care provider involved with the workers rehabilitation.

Physiotherapy Services

Physiotherapists are the "body movement experts". We help people of all ages gain movement function lost due to injury or disease. Physiotherapists are able to perform a thorough assessment of your body and design an individualized treatment program to speed your recovery.

A physiotherapist is a university trained professional with expert knowledge in the complex interaction of all your body's moving parts. They offer a hands on approach to assessment and treatment. They will also teach you how to maintain your highest level of function through exercise, changes to your work habits and home treatment strategies.

Accelerated Employee Recovery Program

This program is suitable for individuals who have become physically deconditioned following an injury or illness.

Workers that have suffered injury or illness preventing them from performing their full duties for the employer may be enrolled in the Accelerated Employee Recovery Program. A physiotherapist will assess the Candidates to determine suitability for the program. The initial report will include a summary of physical findings, list of key physical abilities required to perform employment, potential barriers to recovery, a recovery timelines estimate and initial cost estimate.

This is a comprehensive rehabilitation program individualized to the needs of the worker. The goal of the program is a safe, accelerated, productive and durable return to the previous level of employment for the worker. Employees will attend the recovery program 4-6 hours daily for a maximum of 8 weeks or until they are assessed fit to resume their work duties.  Workers will receive appropriate physiotherapy treatment, ongoing injury recovery education and onsite exercise instruction in consultation with the treating physiotherapist and kinesiologists. Our rehabilitation team will work with the employer to coordinate a work trial or modification of work duties when appropriate.

Accelerated Soft Tissue Injury Recovery Program

The key to a successful and accelerated return to work or sport is an early and accurate assessment and diagnosis followed by appropriate treatment intervention in a timely fashion. This program is suitable for soft tissue injury recovery after work, recreation or competitive sport injuries. The initial assessment is performed by a registered physiotherapist ideally within 48 hours of the injury. Candidates will then be enrolled in a daily treatment program and careful strength and conditioning with our kinesiologists to prevent the effects of deconditioning and disuse.

The program continues for up to 12 weeks or until worker is assessed fit to resume their work duties.

Initial Reporting will include a diagnosis, barriers to recovery, estimated recovery time and an initial cost estimate. A mid program report and discharge summary is included in the cost of the program. A final report will include a treatment summary and recommendations for further care. Temporary or permanent restrictions and employment modification recommendations will be clearly articulated to the employer as the injured athlete or worker returns to their occupation or sport.

Accelerated Work Injury Recovery Program

One of the greatest increases in direct and indirect costs of injury management to the employer is due to inefficiencies in the healthcare and third party payer systems. (WorkSafe, Long and Short-term disability providers) Typically there is indecision as to which payers are responsible, delays in referral, poor access to assessment and diagnostic procedures. If a soft tissue injury is preventing a worker from safely performing their duties they should be assessed using Sports Medicine principles.

  • An early and accurate diagnosis.
  • Appropriate treatment in a timely fashion.
  • Safe and accelerated return to activity.
  • Coordination of service intervention.
  • Clear Communication between stakeholders.

Purpose: Through an efficient application of the sports medicine model of care, soft tissue injuries are accurately assessed and recovery planning is commenced within 48 hours. Workers are able to return to full function as quickly as possible.

Components of the Program: Assessment: A registered physiotherapist performs a physical orthopedic assessment as soon as possible after an injury is reported. The physiotherapist determines if further medical intervention is required and reports to the workers physician. Qualified workers are enrolled in the Accelerated Work Injury Recovery Program. A recovery plan is formulated.

Active Treatment: Rehabilitation is commenced from day 1 for qualified workers. Treatment will have the following priorities:

  1. Reduction of Pain: Pain has a negative effect on recovery and the physiotherapist will utilize a number of modalities to reduce pain including electrotherapy, manual therapy, education, movement pattern correction, acupuncture and specific medical exercise.
  2. Improve and Maintain Movement: Unless early and corrected movement is initiated, abnormal and protective movement is learned. The physiotherapist will use active and passive movements and specific medical exercise protocols.
  3. Cardiovascular Exercise: The physiotherapist is able to modify and vary cardiovascular exercise to the specific needs and abilities of the worker. The benefits of early and safe applications of exercises are well known. We have a fully equipped and unique gymnasium onsite. Our kinesiologists work closely with the physiotherapist to implement safe cardiovascular exercise.
  4. Normalize Functional Activity: Work-specific conditioning is incorporated into the active exercise program based on the findings of the Job Demands Analysis and functional abilities evaluation. If the employer does not have a current Job Demands Analysis a Job Site Visit can be arranged to clarify the functional requirements of employment. (See separate fee schedule)

Education and Communication: Education commences from day one of the rehabilitation program and continues until discharge. Information is used to empower all parties in the rehabilitation process to take ownership of the components that make the sports medicine approach successful. Think of us as the coach of the team.

Attendance and Discharge: Workers are required to attend daily. Discharge from the program occurs when functional limitations have resolved sufficiently for the worker to return safely to work. Our injury rehabilitation team will work with the employer to coordinate a successful return to work through a clearly defined Graduated Return to Work Plan (GRTW Plan)

Reporting: An initial report, progress report, discharge report with recommendations will be generated in a timely fashion and are included in the cost of the program.

Accelerated Whiplash Recovery Program

One of the greatest increases in direct and indirect costs of injury management to the employer is due to inefficiencies in the healthcare and third party payer systems. (ICBC, WorkSafe, Long and Short-term disability providers) If there is indecision as to which payers are responsible, delays in referral, poor access to assessment and diagnostic procedures. In British Columbia, ICBC reimburses medical costs of rehabilitation. The fee structure of ICBC is insufficient to cover the costs of an accelerated program which will be of best benefit to the injured worker.

Purpose: Through an efficient application of the sports medicine model of care, soft tissue injuries occurring due to motor vehicle related soft tissue trauma are accurately assessed and recovery planning is commenced within 48 hours. Workers are able to return to full function as quickly as possible.

Components of the Program: Assessment: A registered physiotherapist performs a physical orthopedic assessment as soon as possible after an injury due to motor vehicle trauma is reported. The physiotherapist determines if further medical intervention is required and reports to the workers physician. Qualified workers are enrolled in the Accelerated Whiplash Recovery Program. A recovery plan is formulated.

If the employer does not have a current Job Demands Analysis a Job Site Visit can be arranged to clarify the functional requirements of employment. (See separate fee schedule)
  5. Postural Habits: Western culture results in a number of consistent postural imbalances and spinal musculature weakness in the population. These two factors increase the severity of seemingly minor traumas and left unaddressed result in long-term chronic problems in spinal postural stability. Specific spinal weaknesses and underlying muscle imbalances are addressed from day 1 in the recovery program.

Education and Communication: Education commences from day one of the rehabilitation program and continues until discharge. Information is used to empower all parties in the rehabilitation process to take ownership of the components that make the sports medicine approach successful. Think of us as the coach of the team.

Footmaxx Computerized Gait Analysis

75 percent of the population will suffer pain from foot-related problems at some point in their lives.

The FOOTMAXX system offers computerized analysis of the feet during walking. Footmaxx analysis coupled with skilled orthopedic assessment by the physiotherapist will determine the source of the foot related problem. Custom-fit, light-weight foot supports that easily fit within most footwear may be required as a component of comprehensive treatment of foot related problems.

Fall Prevention: Highly skilled care of the feet in the elderly is critical in decreasing the fall risk of certain at risk populations.

Diabetic Feet: The specificity of the FOOTMAXX computerized analysis clearly indicates areas at risk of ulcerative breakdown due to biomechanical inefficiencies. This is a wonderful tool for early warning and ongoing care of the diabetic population.

Functional Abilities Evaluations (FAE's)

This one or two day assessment is suitable for any individual who requires an evaluation of their functional abilities. A physiotherapist carries out the assessment.

The purpose of this assessment is to evaluate an individual's ability to perform tasks that are required in everyday living. In some cases specific work simulation tasks may be included in the evaluation process.

Components of the Assessment: The physiotherapist completes a comprehensive orthopedic assessment and screening to determine the safe parameters for testing. The assessment evaluates the individual's ability and limitations in the following tasks:

  • Standing
  • Pushing
  • Sitting
  • Kneeling/Squatting
  • Reaching
  • Hand Movements
  • Lifting
  • Carrying
  • Walking
  • Climbing
  • Simulated Work Tasks

There are over 18 Consistency Checkpoints built into our FAE protocol making it a highly reliable test procedure.

Report: Providing the client signs the appropriate waiver, the clinic will send a comprehensive report within 7 working days of the completed assessment. The report will document the level to which the individual was able to perform each task and what their performance was limited by. The report will also state whether the test results indicate that a consistent effort was given by the client.

Chronic Pain Functional Abilities Evaluation

This two-day assessment is suitable for any individual who has been unable to return to the workplace for a period greater than one year due to chronic pain and requires an evaluation of their functional abilities. A physiotherapist carries out the assessment.

The purpose of this assessment is to determine the extent of a number of psychosocial pain parameters perceived by the individual and evaluate an individual's ability to perform tasks that are required in everyday living. In some cases specific work simulation tasks may be included in the evaluation process.

Components of the Assessment: The physiotherapist completes a comprehensive orthopedic assessment and screening to determine the safe parameters for testing.

A number of psychosocial parameters are evaluated and correlated to normative data. The assessment also evaluates the individual's ability and limitations in the following tasks:

  • Standing
  • Pushing
  • Sitting
  • Kneeling/Squatting
  • Reaching
  • Hand Movements
  • Lifting
  • Carrying
  • Walking
  • Climbing
  • Simulated Work Tasks

There are over 18 Consistency Checkpoints built into our FAE protocol making it a highly reliable test procedure.

Report: Providing the client signs the appropriate waiver, the clinic will send a comprehensive report within 7 working days of the completed assessment. The report will discuss various treatment options and outline a plan to address potential barriers to recovery. Specific questions asked by the payer will be addressed. The report will document the level to which the individual was able to perform each task and what their performance was limited by. The report will also state whether the test results indicate that a consistent effort was given by the client.

Pre-Employment Screen/Recruitment Abilities Testing

In an ideal situation, Employers, workers, trade unions and workplace health and safety committees work collaboratively to maintain a healthy work environment. An important component of this strategy is a well-designed physical screening process. This screen maintains the confidential information pertaining to an employee's health protected by the healthcare provider while allowing all parties to safely place physically capable employees in work positions suitable for the physical abilities. Everyone wins.

Our pre-employment screening/recruitment abilities testing service identifies employees who are at risk for work-related injuries. It includes a musculo-skeletal screen, testing to determine level of physical fitness and work-specific strength, tolerance and biomechanical analysis based on job requirements. Screens are tailored to meet the specific requests of the employer and demands of the workplace.

Medical Exercise Programs

Medical Exercise programs are carefully designed to target known medical risk factors contributing to potential injury. Prehabilitation is a term coined by physiotherapists to utilize structured medical exercise programs that decrease injury risk and improve functional performance. The programs are designed by physiotherapists and implemented collaboratively with our kinesiologists. In most cases the program costs will be tax deductible as a medical expense or employee benefit cost. (Please consult with your accountant)

Medical Exercise programs can be implemented individually, in a group setting or corporately.

Our consultants are able to design and fit your home or corporate facility with a cost analysis and supply of home or commercial grade fitness equipment.
